WOMEN recognized for philanthropy

Observer Reporter

Aug 22, 2018

WOMEN of Southwestern PA was recently awarded the Outstanding Philanthropy Organization from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Western Pennsylvania for 2018. WOMEN of Southwestern PA Inc., is a charitable nonprofit organization based in the South Hills, dedicated to directly supporting less fortunate women and children in Allegheny, Washington, Greene and Fayette counties.

By contributing grants of $500 to $2,500, the organization has helped numerous smaller, non-profit organizations get off the ground and grow.

To date, WOMEN of Southwestern PA has distributed almost $578,000 in grants. Each November, the group sponsors a grant recipient dinner where each organization that received a grant that year talks about how the grant was spent.

WOMEN of Southwestern PA will be honored at a luncheon on National Philanthropy Day, Nov. 15, at the Fairmont Hotel in Pittsburgh.

For more information on how to join the group, visit www.womenofswpa.org.

Women Organized to Mentor, Empower and Network

Peters Township native and founder of FemSecure, Terra Crosby, will teach us about something that could be live-saving: the ability for a woman to defend herself. Terra believes that it is a necessity to be proactive in order to protect yourself and the ones you love. The mission, and passion, of FemSecure is to equip women with the tools and knowledge to not only be prepared for an actual emergency scenario, but to have the tactical awareness to prevent it from happening altogether. Terra will share vital information with us about prevention, and she and her husband will offer demonstrations of self-defense techniques to us.

We are also asking everyone attending the social to donate nonperishables for The Washington City Mission Food Pantry which is very low in supplies.
